Asphalt Facts and Care

Asphaltic Concrete is simply, another word for black top. It is top quality, and widely used throughout the world.

Asphaltic Concrete is a mixture of asphalt cement (a petroleum product), and course and fine aggregates. The two materials are mixed at an extreme temperature of 3000 Fahrenheit, in order to entirely coat the aggregate, and give the mix workability. The asphalt binds the aggregates together. Next, the mix is laid in place, compacted, and left to cool. The principal advantage of using Asphaltic Concrete is that it is pliable, and easy to work. It has just enough elasticity to allow the mat to adjust to subtle settlements in the surface, which helps prevent cracking, and gives your newly paved area a longer existence. The downside to Asphaltic Concrete is that the same flexibility makes the surface susceptible to indentations until the asphalt on the surface has completely hardened. Your paved area will eventually lose its tenderness. Please be patient. It will take 1 year for your paved area to fully cure.

As with anything, if you want it to last, it must be completed by an experienced contractor and well maintained on your part. Your asphalt project will present you with many years of aesthetic appeal, and useful service - if taken care of properly.

Listed below are some helpful recommendations on caring for your newly paved area. Please read carefully.

An educated customer is a happy customer!

  • To assist in the cooling process, water down the area with a garden hose (especially during hot months).
  • Avoid turning and twisting vehicle wheels when stopped on the paved area. Also avoid making sharp turns and turnarounds. This will prevent scuffing.
  • Secure/support all exposed edges of the area. Backfill edges with topsoil and seed.
  • Avoid placing any sharp objects on the newly paved area.
  • Allow area sufficient time to fully cure.
  • Do not apply salt or melting chemicals. This will damage and fade asphalt. We are not responsible for damage due to snow removal.
